Boulder, Colorado - With a picturesque mountain backdrop, the 5430 Long Course Triathlon (half-Ironman distance) showcased one of the world’s top female triathletes USA’s Joanna Zeiger. The 2000 Olympian and Ironman Champion dominated from the start and cruised to victory in her hometown. Zeiger won with a time of 4:27:34, nearly 10 minutes ahead of the next female.
“My goal for the race was to have a really strong swim and bike, and be as steady as possible on the run. The swim went well – I was second out of the water behind the men’s leader,” Zeiger said.
Zeiger was truly on home soil, as she lives and trains in Boulder year around with Coach Dave Scott.
Zeiger fractured her toe at this year’s Lifetime Fitness Battle of the Sexes Triathlon, where she was 2nd last year. With nearly 4 weeks off of running, Zeiger showed her form is not far off.
“The bike felt really good – the extra miles I put in while my broken toe was healing paid off. The run was definitely tough. It was my first run off the bike since Coeur d’Alene 7 weeks ago, and the hardest run I have done since fracturing my toe 4 weeks ago. All in all, it was good preparation for Kona.”
Up next in the triathlon “Jack of all trades’” schedule is Accenture Chicago Triathlon, August 27th. It is a good speed day before a final training block for Kona.
“I enjoy the challenge of racing all distances. The short races help my speed for long course, and the longer races help my base for short course.”
Zeiger is the only female athlete to win a long course and short course USA national title, represent the United States at the Olympic Games and win an Ironman title.
