With Kenyan stars Catherine Ndereba and Paul Tergat already announced, the New York Road Runners has added more depth the field of their inaugural NYC Half-Marathon presented by NIKE with a group of international and American stars.
Ndereba will have to contend with the challenges of Australian Benita Johnson, the 2004 IAAF World Cross Country 8-K champion; Romanian Constantina Tomescu, the reigning IAAF World Half-Marathon champion; and American Colleen De Reuck, the 2004 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials champion. They have run career best times of 1:07:55, 1:08:10 and 1:08:38, respectively, over the half-marathon distance.
Tergat will be chased by a pair of American Olympians, Alan Culpepper and Abdi Abdirahman. The 33 year-old Culpepper, the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon champion, has a personal best time of 1:03:11 for the half-marathon, while Abdirahman will make his half-marathon debut (he is the USA record holder for 20-K at 58:42).
Each of the race winners will receive $10,000.
