U.S. Olympic Marathoners Culpepper and De Reuck Join the Professional Field of the Inaugural NYC Half-Marathon Presented by NIKE

Two-time Olympian Alan Culpepper and four-time Olympian Colleen De Reuck will join the sold-out field of 10,000 runners in the inaugural NYC Half-Marathon Presented by NIKE on Sunday, August 27, it was announced today by New York Road Runners. Both marathoners represented the United States in Athens after winning their respective Olympic Marathon Trials in 2004.

The professional field grew even stronger with the announcement that Benita Johnson (Australia), Constantina Tomescu-Dita (Romania), and Abdi Abdirahman (United States) will also participate in the 13.1-mile race through the streets of New York. Marathon world record-holder Paul Tergat and Olympic marathon silver medalist Catherine Ndereba were the first professional athletes to be announced for the race, which offers $60,000 in prize money, including $10,000 each to the male and female champion.

Culpepper, 33, made his half-marathon debut this past February in a special invitation-only race as part of the Freescale Austin Marathon, finishing third with a time of 1:03:11. The 2004 Olympic Trials Champion's other notable performances this year include a fifth-place finish at the Boston Marathon (2:11:02) and a fourth-place showing at the USA 15 km Championships (44:13).

De Reuck holds a half-marathon personal best of 1:08:38 and won the 2003 USA Women's Half-Marathon Championships (1:10:00), her fifth career victory at that distance. Earlier this season, the 42-year-old South Africa native finished second at the USA Cross Country Championships 8 km in New York City's Van Cortlandt Park.
