HONOLULU - (August 15, 2006) - The 34th Honolulu Marathon set for Sunday, Dec. 10 will have a prize purse more than double what was offered in the men's and women's divisions in 2005.
Men's and women's prizes will be distributed equally.
The biggest increase will be for first place. Last year, it paid $15,000, but this year it will pay $40,000. Money for 2nd through 5th place finishes will double.
The bonus structure will remain the same. The champion who breaks the Honolulu Marathon men's or women's course record will get an extra $10,000. There are also 11 different time incentive bonuses applicable to men and women that pay between $1000 and $50,000.
The Honolulu Marathon began offering prize money in 1985 when 1st place paid $2000.
Kenyans have won the men's division here 16 times since 1985 and runners from former Soviet republics have won the women's title 9 of the last 10 years.
The defending men's champion and race record holder is 5-time winner Jimmy Muindi (moo-indy) of Kenya. His record is 2 hours, 11 minutes and 12 seconds in 2004.
The defending women's champion is Olesya Nurgalieva of Russia. The women's race record is held by 3-time winner Lyubov (loo-bohf) Morgunova of Russia: 2 hours, 27 minutes and 33 seconds (also 2004).
