Despite trailing for most of the race, Paul Tichelaar used a final push to overtake Derek Kite of Colorado Springs, Colorado, for his second win of the season. Tichelaar won the race by only 14 seconds in a time of 1:54:27. Tichelaar, from Edmonton, also won the Pan American Championships on June 4th in Brasilia. Next up for the 23-year-old is the Elite World Championships in two weeks in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Tichelaar has been very consistent, in this his best year, as an elite racer - so far in 2006 Tichelaar has five top-8 results and three top-4 finishes. Dave Messenheimer, from Colorado Springs won the bronze medal in 1:55:12. Nick Hastie, from Victoria, was 4th in 1:55:40
Mary Beth Ellis also from Colorado Springs won the Elite Women’s race in 2:07:32. Ellis, competing in her second ITU race in Canada this summer, finished third in the Brampton Continental Cup on July 2nd. Edmonton’s Carolyn Murray who will also be representing Canada at the World Championships finished 23 seconds behind Ellis in 2:07:55 and took home the silver medal. The bronze medal went to Calgary’s Lisa Mensink who crossed the finish line 2:09:12.
