FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Gary Jones, a freshman on the Arkansas track and field
team, has been named to the 2006 USA TODAY All-USA high school boys track
and field team. The 2006 USA TODAY All-USA high school track and field teams
were coordinated by Fred Baer. Selections were made by Jack Shepard, high
school editor of Track and Field News.
Criteria for being named to the team included ranking on USA TODAY and Track
and Field News national lists, the number of top performances, and
head-to-head competition in the regular season and major postseason meets.
Jones, who started classes at UA on Monday, is a native of Webster, N.Y. and
will join the Hogs' heralded jumping crew this season, concentrating on the
long and triple jumps. He has a personal-best triple jump of 51-5.25, the
mark and event that earned him a spot on the USA TODAY All-USA team.
"Anytime our student-athletes achieve exceptional things, it's exciting,"
field events assistant coach Dick Booth said. "We expect that in the type of
student-athletes we recruit and we don't take it for granted. That is the
type of student-athlete we want to come to Arkansas to compete. We are proud
to have him here and he should be proud of the honor."
