Samantha McGlone beat defending Triathlon World Champion, Emma Snowsill, on Sunday to win the Accenture Chicago Triathlon – her first Olympic Distance win of the season.
McGlone, from Otterburn Park, Quebec, defeated Snowsill, from Australia, the favorite to win next weekend’s World Championship in Lausanne, by nearly 2 minutes. McGlone finished in 2:02:25.
McGlone, 26, is in peak form as she heads to Lausanne. “Last year I finished 9th at the Worlds and this year I hope to improve upon that. I feel great heading into a major championship.”
Billed as the world’s largest triathlon, the 24th running of the Chicago Triathlon had near perfect conditions for the athletes with temperatures in the mid 20’s and light winds.
Snowsill, the 2-time world champion finished in 2:04:14, Becky Lavelle, the defending Chicago champion, crossed the finish line in 2:05:04 – 50 seconds behind Snowsill.
McGlone won the race coming from behind – she was almost 2 minutes down after the swim but a great bike and run put her in the lead and she never looked back and won in convincing fashion. McGlone easily had the best bike split (1:01:06) and the best run split (36:25) of the day.
McGlone was second behind Lavelle in last year’s Chicago event.
