Athletics: Gay Returns To Event Top In The Latest IAAF World Rankings

Monte-Carlo - There are four new Event Rankings leaders this week following an intense week of one-day international meetings.

Tyson Gay (USA) returned to the top of the Men’s 200m Event Ranking after spending a week unranked, and did so in outstanding style. Gay cruised to victory in the Van Damme Memorial, the Brussels stop of the IAAF Golden League, in 19.79 seconds (1430 points). His performance not only elevates him above his nearest rival and compatriot Wallace Spearmon in the Event Ranking, but also moves Gay into 3rd position in the Men’s Overall Ranking ahead of Saif Saaeed Shaheen (QAT) and Jeremy Wariner (USA). Gay was ranked only 10th two weeks ago, but a new personal best of 9.84 (1413 points) in the 100m in Zürich, and his overwhelming victory in Belgium accounted for the former NCAA champion’s rise.
