Most of them participated in the first edition of this triathlon with the Ironman label, and they have signed up again to live a great sportive moment in the Principality. 18 athletes will hold the colours of the palace to grab their slots – and maybe for both World Championships.
The second edition of the Monaco Ironman 70.3 has already its loyal athletes, and the athletes of the AS Monaco will not argue the converse. It is not exactly the same group of athletes, certainly, but 2 of the 18 athletes are women – exactly as in 2005, and last year’s Finishers are there, too.
On the women’s side, Marisa Mérédith for example has won her age group. This year, she will be accompanied by Alexandra Barbero. On the men’s side, a total of 16 triathletes from the Principality will participate. The group of second-timers in this race – Paul Lanat, Remo Lentino, Pierre Lorenzi and Grégory Rougaignon – will be enriched by the presence of Hervé Banti, happy European Age Group Champion on the short distance, and no other than the club’s trainer, Denis Watrin. Also on the starting line: Jean Claude Perillo, Sébastien Deschamps, Romain Viale, Francesco Angelini, Maximilien Maccio, Bruno Ripoll, Alain Binsinger, Luciano Bonizzi, Gilbert Meseguer and Youn Jobic.
All these AS Monaco triathletes could be nowhere else than at the start of this beautiful competition on the Larvotto beaches this Sunday, 3rd of September, at 7h00 in the morning. The will proudly represent the colours of Monaco, will try to make them shine brightly, and tempt to grab the qualification for the two World Championships.
The Monaco Ironman 70.3 presented by CAL Investments Limited has a double offer for the athletes: 100 qualifying slots for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Clearwater/Florida in 2006 and 30 slots for the Ironman World Championship in Kona/Hawaii in 2007.
The athletes have to accomplish the 1.9km swim, 90km bike and the half-marathon of 21.1km in order to get their medals. Self evidently, the fulfilment will be up to the mark and to the difficulty – the 600 athletes will cross Nice’s hinterland’s beautiful villages* and overwhelming sceneries. The Finishline at the foot of the Hotel de Paris, just a stone’s throw away from the Casino will remain in the athlete’s fond memories like the cherry on top of this magnificent race in a magic place.
Note also Marc Herremans’ presence on the starting line – the handicapped athlete will race in his wheelchair and handcycle. He has enlightened the first edition of this race with his passion, and he promised to be back. Back he is, ready to give all to finish the course within the time limit of 8h30.
Important detail : this year again the whole race area is accessible to the public and the tribunes at the Finishline are free of charge of course. Everyone is welcome to profit entirely from this great sportive festival.
