Athletics: Bay Area’s Own Train Set to Rock - Inaugural Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon Post-race Concert

Concert open to the public - Race participants get in free with race number

SAN JOSE, Calif., (August 28, 2006) – The Bay Area’s musical group Train is set to rock the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. for the inaugural Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon post-race concert Sun., Oct. 8, 2006, where thousands of runners, walkers and rock ‘n’ roll fans will celebrate the final night of a weekend filled with music and sport hosted by the City of San Jose.

Prior to the evening concert, 15,000 runners and walkers will complete the 13.1-mile half marathon course that winds thru San Jose’s downtown and neighboring communities. Along the route, live bands and energetic cheerleaders will entertain runners and walkers at each mile of the course creating a city-wide block party atmosphere.

“Since this is the first year of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon in San Jose and the Bay Area, we wanted to showcase a big local band,” said Elizabeth O’Brien, the event’s general manager. “We are excited Train agreed to perform.”

Train began in 1994 when Pat Monahan, an Erie, Penn. native living in Los Angeles, met Rob Hotchkiss (who left the band in 2003). After moving to San Francisco and appearing in coffeehouses as an acoustic duo, they added Johnny Colt (bass) and Jimmy Stafford (guitar), who like Hotchkiss, were veterans of the L.A. band the Apostles. Scott Underwood came on board as drummer shortly afterward.

The band quickly developed an avid local following and, by 1997, was opening for national bands like Blues Traveler, Barenaked Ladies, and Counting Crows. In February 1998, the band hit the road for two years in a rundown 1987 Dodge Ram minivan with a little red trailer in support of its self-titled debut album.

Early in 2000, Train took a break from the road to begin recording a new album. The band recorded for the rest of the year, between headlining tour dates, and making television appearances.

When the album Drops Of Jupiter arrived on March 27, 2001, its title track single, "Drops Of Jupiter (Tell Me)," was already a runaway hit on several Billboard charts. “Drops Of Jupiter” has gone on to achieve Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) double platinum status. The single spent a total of 53 weeks on the Hot 100, through April 2002. The track also won a Best Arrangement Grammy.

The release of My Private Nation in June 2003 gave Train fans the Grammy-nominated #1 Adult Top 40/Adult Contemporary radio smash "Calling All Angels." Alive At Last, the group's acclaimed live concert album was released in 2004.

Playing literally hundreds of shows for thousands upon thousands of fans, Train earned a well-deserved reputation as one of the nation's hottest live bands. With the band’s latest album For Me, It's You, Train continues its musical journey into new territory, offering the group's fans 13 new reasons to celebrate a popular American band.

Train is:
Pat Monahan - Vocals, Jimmy Stafford - Guitars, Scott Underwood - Drums, Brandon Bush - Keyboards, Johnny Colt - Bass Guitar

The race offers a scenic course through San Jose and in addition to rockin' music staged approximately every mile, hundreds of local high school cheerleaders line the route to provide further motivation.
