Many of America's top distance runners will gather in New Haven on Monday for the 29th annual NewAlliance New Haven Road Race which serves as the U.S. 20-K road racing championship.
Ryan Shay, who won New Haven in 2004 and was second in 2005, is the top entrant in the men's race. He'll face former Virginia Intermont star, Fernando Cabada, who set a pending USA 25-K record when he won the U.S. title at that distance back in May, and America's top master, Mbarak Hussein, who set the U.S. masters half-marathon record in Philadelphia last September.
Competing in the longest race of his life, Ryan Hall will also be running the streets of New Haven. He won the USA 12-K cross country title last February and has to be considered a contender for victory on Monday.
Two-time Olympian, Marla Runyan, leads the women's field and will do battle with defending champion, Turena Johnson Lane, and 31:21.92 10,000m runner, Elva Dryer.
"We're very excited about having the country's top runners compete in New Haven," said John Courtmanche, who is the president of the board of directors which governs the race. "We have very deep men's and women's race fields," he said. "With a cool day the men's and women's 20-K American records could be in jeopardy."
Those records are 58:42 set by Abdi Abdirahman in a solo run at New Haven last year, and 1:05:52 set by Marla Runyan at New Haven in 2003.
The race offers nearly $40,000 in prize money with $7,500 going to the race winners. There is also a $1,000 course record bonus (57:37/1:05:11).
