The city of Salford finds out tomorrow whether it has been successful in
attracting another major sporting event to Britain in the lead up to the
2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in London.
The destination of the 2010 BG Triathlon World Championships will be decided
tomorrow (MONDAY 4 SEPTEMBER) in Lausanne. Members of Salford's bid team,
including Councillor Merry, Leader of Salford City Council, have been
involved in a series of presentations this week in the lead up to tomorrow's
crucial decision.
He commented: "Having successfully hosted four successive World Cup events
we are confident that Salford has a proven track record. A great deal of
preparation and hard work has been invested in the World Championships bid
as this would be an incredible coup for the city, should Salford be selected
as the 2010 host."
Hosting the World Championships on Salford Quays will provide a huge boost
to Salford as well as triathlon in Britain. Last year Britain had 15
athletes ranked in the top fifty in the World.
Today British athletes compete in this years World Championships event. Tim
Don holds Britain's hopes in the men's elite race and Manchester's Liz
Blatchford goes in the women's race.
Andrea Whitcombe is highly fancied having won the London Triathlon last
month, beating in form New Zealander Sam Warriener, who won the World Cup
race in Salford on 30 July.
Britain's future stars, including Will Clarke and Olly Freeman go in the
under 23 race and will be hot prospects for the gold medal.
