The 2006 Canadian Age Group Triathlon team more than doubled their medal output this year compared to last year with 105 fewer competitors.
This year, in Lausanne, with 133 athletes on the start line, Canadian athletes were on the podium 7 times including 3 gold medals. All 3 of Canada’s gold medallists are from Alberta. Last year, in Honolulu, with a record 238 athletes, Canada only came away with 3 medals – two bronze and 1 silver. This year Canada won 3 gold medals, 3 silver medals and 1 bronze medal.
Nancy Burden, from Edmonton, won Canada’s first gold medal in the Women’s 45-49 category. Burden won the race in 2:29:04 buoyed by the best run split of 40:13 – the best of the day by more than 2 minutes. Burden won her second straight medal at the World Championships – last year she was third in the 40-44 division.
St. Albert’s Laurie Murray won the Women’s 60-64 category in convincing fashion – she beat the field by more than 8 minutes on the run and crossed the finish line in 2:45:59.
Calgary’s Kim Wedgerfield won the Women’s Athlete with a Disability division in 4:37:12.
Chantell Widney made it 4 medals from the province of Alberta, the Edmonton native won the silver medal in the Women’s 25-29 division with a time of 2:24:51.
Grant Darby, from Hamilton, as he did in 2005, finished second in the Men’s Athlete with a Disability division (Lower Extremity above the Knee). Darby came home in 3:19:47.
Steve Hardwicke also won a silver medal in the Men’s 60-64 division. Hardwicke, from Penticton, BC, finished the race in 2:37:00. Hardwicke’s bike split of 1:10:55 was easily the best of the day.
Canada’s lone bronze medal went to Brampton resident Hans J. Porten. Porten competed in the Men’s 50-54 category and crossed the finish line in 2:20:33 – just 27 seconds out of second place.
