DENVER, Colo. -- August 28, 2006 - Mayor John W. Hickenlooper is challenging
Denver's business community to join the race to combat homelessness in
Denver by entering a team in the Denver Marathon Corporate Relay to benefit
Denver's Road Home - the Mayor's 10-year plan to end homelessness. This
world-class marathon is scheduled for Sunday, October 15, 2006.
With more than 4,400 men, women and children homeless in Denver, ending
homelessness in Denver is one of Mayor Hickenlooper's major initiatives for
the city. As one of the key advocates of Denver's Road Home and to show his
support of the first annual Denver Marathon, the Mayor's Office is
registering a relay team for the Marathon.
"Getting as many residents and businesses as possible involved in our
efforts to end homelessness is crucial to our ability to successfully
transition people from the streets into lives of self-sufficiency and
stability," said Hickenlooper. "On behalf of Denver's Road Home and the
Denver Marathon, we challenge Denver's business community and
community-at-large to join our race against homelessness by participating in
this exciting athletic event."
Businesses and organizations can enter teams of four persons to run the
Denver Marathon Corporate Relay. The relay begins in front of the State
Capitol and will be divided into four legs with transition zones in City,
Cheesman and Washington Parks. In addition to the standard entry fee,
corporate relay teams will be expected to raise a minimum of $500 per team
with 100 percent of the funds raised to benefit Denver's Road Home. The
Denver Marathon will award "The Community Cup" to the team that raises the
most money for this noble cause.
"We are grateful to the Denver Marathon for selecting Denver's Road Home as
the beneficiary of the corporate relay," said Jamie Van Leeuwen, project
manager for Denver's Road Home. "This is a great opportunity for Denver to
kick off an exciting new community event while generating much needed
financial support for this important initiative. As the runners hit the
streets, we will continue to move more homeless off of them and into
housing."
Registration is open for the marathon, half-marathon, or four-person
marathon relay. Registration fees for the marathon are: Standard (thru
August 31st), $85; Late Entry (After August 31st), $95; and Walk-Up at the
EXPO (October 13-14), $105. Half-Marathon registration fees are: Standard
