September 12th 2006, OTTAWA – The high performance field at the TransCanada 10K Championships is taking shape with some elite Canadian runners confirming their attendance. The event, which takes place Saturday October 7th at 3:30 pm, will begin at the Canadian War Museum and run along the picturesque Ottawa Parkway.
The championship offers the unique opportunity for everybody and anybody to register and come out to run alongside the nation’s best, also serving as a mass participation race. Canadian champions, age category winners and the winners of the Political Challenge will all be crowned. The Political Challenge will pit politicians and political staffers, identified with a unique race bib, against each other.
NCAA sensation Simon Bairu from Regina, Sask. will be looking to add to his already impressive curriculum. Bairu is the reigning Canadian Cross-Country champion; his illustrious career already includes an NCAA championship and a Big Ten Division championship. Reid Coolsaet from Guelph, Ont. is also confirmed in the field. Coolsaet recently won his third straight 5,000-metre Canadian Championship in Ottawa at the Canadian Track and Field Championships. Keep an eye on the event website for the profiles of all the elite athletes as they are confirmed for the race.
All registered participants in the event will receive an official event shirt, a personalized race bib, a finisher’s certificate and a participant medal. National champions will be rewarded with cash prizes and championship medals.
The championship will also host the TIMEX Series final which is the culmination of the TIMEX provincial series, encompassing every province across the country. The TIMEX National Road Race Series has over 110 races with in excess of 140,000 participants, designed for all runners from beginner to the elite competitor.
