The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) announced last week that Shari Boyle has been suspended for one year for an anti-doping violation that took place at the Duathlon National Championships on May 21, 2006 in Ancaster, Ontario.
In response to the CCES decision, Triathlon Canada disclosed that Boyle forfeits all results between May 21st and September 3rd, the most significant in this time frame was her third place finish at the 2006 National Duathlon Championships. Boyle has been disqualified from this race and has relinquished her bronze medal.
Annie Gervais has been bumped up a spot and will receive third place prize money and the bronze medal. Please click on the link below to see the updated results from the 2006 National Duathlon Championships.
Boyle, from Toronto, will be ineligible to compete for a period of 12 months commencing on September 3rd, 2006.
The 33-year-old tested positive for the presence of Ephedrine at a level of 30ml. Anything greater than 10ml constitutes a doping violation.
Throughout the entire hearing the issue was not whether Boyle took an illegal substance – the question more relevant was did she take it to better her performance. Arbitrator, Graeme Mew, determined in his final decision that “The Athlete’s use of Ephedrine was not intended to enhance sport performance.” And therefore the suspension was reduced from 2 years to one year.
