Athletics: Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports Awards Big Sur International Marathon “Just Run” Program

(September 20, 2006 – Carmel, CA) The Big Sur International Marathon is one of seven winners of the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports Awards in recognition of their commitment to the physical activity, fitness levels and well being of children in their local community. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger presented the Gold Medals at a ceremony in Sacramento on September 13, 2006. The award brings with it a $10,000 prize.

The Marathon received the award for JUST RUN, a free, web based program designed for grades two through eight, aimed at combating childhood obesity and diabetes while promoting physical fitness and healthy lifestyle choices.

JUST RUN encourages children to run, both in group settings and with their parents. Miles are accumulated as the children participate in a virtual run across the United States with stops at geographical points of interest along the way. They are also encouraged to perform JUST DEEDS; acts of good citizenship that help them earn incentive awards.

Wally Kastner, Race Director of the Big Sur International Marathon, said that in the past year over 4,300 Monterey County school children participated in the program and logged over 100,000 miles.

“We’re very happy about the award,” said Kastner. “The money will go to support the JUST RUN program, which is entirely supported by grants and sponsorships.”
