September 26th 2006, OTTAWA – Athletics Canada will honour Émilie Mondor at the 2006 TransCanada 10km Championships and Run with the Champions mass participation race in Ottawa. Mondor was killed on September 9th outside of Ottawa in a car accident.
Émilie had a deep passion for running and competed in cross-country, the 3,000-metres, 5,000-metres, 10,000-metres, and was training to compete in her first marathon. Mondor battled back from injuries this season and in her first race was 2nd in the Sporting Life 10km in Toronto. She was registered and set to take part in the TransCanada 10K Championships in Ottawa on her way to completing her comeback with a Canadian title.
Émilie Mondor, 17th in the 5,000-metres at the 2004 Olympic Games, will be honoured by Martin Goulet, Athletics Canada Chief of High Performance and friend of the family, followed by a moment of silence preceding the start of the race. Mondor will also be immortalized on every participant’s personal race bib.
This unique event will feature top Canadian athletes as they vie for a Canadian title running on the same course and race, as participants registered in the 10K Run with the Champions. The race begins in front of the new Canadian War Museum at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday October 7th. For more information on the event and to register, please visit www.transcanada10km.ca.
