World Championship medalists to compete in Daegu

Four-time World champion and 1996 Olympic champion Allen Johnson's matchup with World Record holder and reigning Olympic champion Liu Xiang (CHN)Thursday will highlight the 2006 Daegu Athletics Meeting in Daegu, Korea.

With Xiang leading the season series between them 2-1, Johnson will be running for the win to even the score. 2006 NCAA champion Aries Merritt will look to pull the upset.

The women's 100m will see reigning World champion Lauryn Williams pitted against 2003 World champion Torri Edwards.

Other U.S. athletes vying for the win in one of the last meets of the season include 2006 World Indoor silver medalist Leonard Scott in the men's 100 meters. Wallace Spearmon, the 2005 World Outdoor 200m silver medalist, and Kaaron Conwright will compete in the men's 200m. 2005 NCAA Indoor champion Arik Wilson is the top entrant in the men's triple jump, and three-time U.S. runner-up Jillian Schwartz will look to go out on a high note in the women's pole vault.

Olympian, BYU track coach Robison dies

Clarence Robison, the patriarch of the Brigham Young University track and field program, passed away Monday in his sleep. He was 83. Robison took the helm of the BYU Track team in 1949, just as he completed his career at BYU as a track athlete. The previous year he represented the United States at the 1948 Olympics in London, running the 5,000 meters. He served as the BYU head track coach for 40 years, retiring in 1988.Robison coached thousands of athletes over his career, including over 100 All-Americans, more than 20 individual National Champions and 26 Olympians. BYU won 18 conference championships under his tutelage and tied for the national championship in 1970. His son, Mark, is coach of the BYU men's track and field team.

Robison is survived by his wife, Monita, nine children, 41 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. His funeral is scheduled for Monday in Provo.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 2 at 11:00 a.m., at the Grandview South Stake Center, 1150 N Grandview Avenue, Provo. A viewing will be held on Sunday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the Berg Mortuary, 185 East Center Street in Provo.

Olympic race walker Allen dies

1960 Olympic Games race walker John W. Allen died September 16 in San Bernardino, California. He was 80.

A native of Buffalo New York, Allen was one of America's finest race walkers in the 1950s, winning five national titles during his career. A 50 km race walker at the 1960 Olympics in Rome, Allen won the national 50 km championship in 1961.

The fourth place finisher in the 20 km walk at the United States vs. Russia Dual Meet in 1962, Allen won the national 10 km and 40 km race walk titles that year.

Allen continued competing as a masters athlete and was named the AAU Masters Walker of the year in 1978. He was the runner-up in the 20 km walk at the 1979 World Veterans Championships in Hanover, Germany.

A Niagara Track & Field Hall of Fame inductee in 1998, Allen served in the Navy during World War II as a radio operator on a minesweeper in the Pacific. He was employed as a salesman for Alling & Cory Paper Co. and for Buffalo Linen Supply.

Services will be at 11 a.m. October 7 in Amigone Funeral Home, 2600 Sheridan Drive, Town of Tonawanda.
