The 12th annual Toronto Marathon (TM) will run through the streets of Toronto on Sunday, October 15, 2006. The race begins at Mel Lastman Square, and follows an 18 km loop through the former city of North York, continuing south on Yonge Street through areas including Forest Hill, Rosedale and the downtown sector, before heading north toward the finish line at Queen’s Park.
Organizers are expecting over 10,000 to participate in the marathon, half marathon, 5K and relay. The event raises funds and awareness for the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation, MS, Hemophilia, POGO, Toronto Foundation for Student Success, the Canadian Institute for Cultural Affairs and the Canadian Athletes Now Fund. Since 1995, the Toronto Marathon has raised over $4.5 million for its affiliated charities.
The Toronto Marathon is a qualifying event for the Boston Marathon. It is sanctioned by Athletics Canada and the AIMS and meets international standards. The Toronto Marathon attracts over 50,000 spectators to the streets of Toronto, and draws on the community for over 1,200 volunteers.
