INDIANAPOLIS - Wallace Spearmon has been named USA Track & Field's
Athlete of the Week after winning the men's 200 meters Thursday at the
2006 Daegu International Meeting in Daegu, South Korea.
The 2005 World Outdoor silver medalist, Spearmon crushed the field in
the men's 200m crossing the line in 19.65 seconds. Spearmon's time
places him third on the all-time list, trailing only National Track &
Field Hall of Famer Michael Johnson, who set the world record of 19.32
seconds in winning the gold medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta,
and Xavier Carter, who ran 19.63 seconds on July 11, 2006 in Lausanne,
Switzerland.
Now in its sixth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed
to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF
names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF
website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the
previous week.
