Triathlon: Ironman Announces the Official Bike Partner of the Ford Ironman World Championship 70.3

October 6, 2006 – Today, Ironman announces that Chainwheel Drive will become the official bike shop and technical support provider of the Ford Ironman World Championship 70.3. Chainwheel Drive will handle the shipping of athletes’ bikes to and from the event, in addition to all technical support before and during the event. Chainwheel Drive will also be one of two on-site retail partners and will manage the sale of popular Ironman products and gear such as Timex Ironman Watches, Kuji Ironman Helmets, Profile Design Aerobars, PowerBar products and Look Pedals.

“I am very excited that Clearwater has been chosen as the site for the inaugural Ford Ironman World Championship 70.3. It’s an opportunity to showcase our beautiful area in a healthy and positive way. We are also honored that Chainwheel Drive has been selected as the equipment provider and technical support for the triathlon. We’re hard at work gearing up for this exciting inaugural event,” said Tom Jessup, owner of Chainwheel Drive.

Founded in 1972, Chainwheel Drive is the Bay area’s premier cycling store. With locations in Palm Harbor and Clearwater, Chainwheel offers technical service along with a wide product selection from a staff that includes novice triathletes to professional and USAT-certified coaches. Additionally, Chainwheel Drive provides professional fittings and performance evaluations, worldwide shipping and delivery, bike rentals and nutrition consultations to all of its customers.

Chainwheel Drive helped stage the cycling leg of the area’s first-ever triathlon and has been an active part of the local triathlon scene since the early 1980’s. In addition to being the official bike partner for the Ford Ironman World Championship 70.3, Chainwheel has also served as the bike sponsor of the popular St. Anthony’s Triathlon for many years.

Launched in June of 2005, the Ironman 70.3 Series consists of more than 20 global events that culminate each November at the Ford Ironman World Championship 70.3 in Clearwater, Fla., one of the world’s top beach destinations. Supported by local partners such as the City of Clearwater, the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Florida Sports Foundation, the world championship event will host more than 1,800 domestic and international athletes. This year, more than 20,000 athletes will compete for a coveted slot at the inaugural Ford Ironman World Championship 70.3. Ford Motor Company, PowerBar, Timex and Janus are among the leading companies that lend support to many of the events in the Ironman 70.3 Series.
