Running industry professionals will gather tomorrow in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., for the Road Race Management Race Directors' Meeting and Trade Exhibit. The two-day meeting is organized by Road Race Management, the Bethesda, Md., publisher of a race management newsletter bearing the same name.
The meeting attracts race directors, elite athlete coordinators, event timers, race equipment vendors, journalists, clubs, officials, and others who have a professional interest in the sport of road racing and distance running.
"We are very pleased with the turnout as we have a broad cross section of U.S. events and running organizations represented, in addition to representation from England and Japan," commented Phil Stewart, the editor and publisher of Road Race Management. "Added to that are many new exhibitors of products of great interest to race directors."
The meeting kicks off tomorrow with a welcome reception sponsored by Running Times magazine, Marathon Printing and the World's Best 10-K. An award honoring the sports' top race director will also be presented. On Friday the trade exhibit opens featuring many vendors of race equipment and services, and the formal part of the meeting begins with a seminar on medical planning and management. Other seminars on using the web, post-race sponsorship reporting, and race anatomy will take place on Friday. There will even be an open forum on the impact of drug use and testing in distance running.
"The forum on Drugs: how to clean up the sport, is generating a lot of interest, too," added Stewart
The Saturday program includes a discussion on the world of elite athletes and navigating the legal issues which face race organizers. Saturday's highlight will be the keynote luncheon entitled, "Twenty-Two Years in Twenty-Two Minutes," where outgoing Peachtree Road Race director Julia Emmons will address meeting participants, looking back at her career. The meeting closes Saturday afternoon.
