Reigning Olympic Marathon gold medalist, Stefano Baldini, won the 60th edition of the Giro Al Sas in Trento, Italy, yesterday, his final tune-up race before the ING New York City Marathon on Nov. 5.
Baldini, 35, covered the ten-loop 10 km course in 28:43, two seconds ahead of Uganda's Wilson Busienei. Kenyan David Chemweno was only one second behind Busienei, while two-time world marathon champion, Jaouad Gharib of Morocco, finished sixth in 29:02 (Gharib is in the midst of his mileage build-up for the Fukuoka Marathon in December).
With a 2:07:22 marathon personal best --the Italian record-- Baldini has competed at the ING New York City Marathon three previous times, making the podium once in 1997 when he finished third. In his most recent performance in New York, in 2002, he finished fifth in 2:09:12.
