Queensland’s top distance runner over the last five years, Peter Nowill will take on one of Australia's biggest name athletes, Victorian Lee Troop the current Australian Marathon champion who is still able to match it over 5000m with an Australian Record 13:14:82 against his name.
Nowill a former Australian Track Champion and Olympic representative in Steeplechase has never won the prestigious Asics Bolt street race but is in good shape to take out the 2006 title.
Joining them fellow Victorian Collis Birmingham keen to stand on the podium this year after finishing fourth here last year. Birmingham has produced some good results this year finishing second at the Australian 5km and 1500m Championships. His win last weekend at the Burnie Ten shows he’s still in good form and will be in the mix for medals.
Another Queenslander to look for is Michael Shelley, 21, placing second in this years Bridge to Brisbane Run and Burnie Ten last weekend.
The Asics Bolt will get underway from 3:50pm and making it tough conditions in the heat of the afternoon. It would be a big ask to crack the race records held by Joseph Waweru (13:41 – 1999) and Benita Johnson (15:22 – 2002).
In the women's race 2004 ASICS Bolt winner Eloise Wellings will headline a strong women’s field with two time winner of the City to Surf Haley McGregor and Albury’s Victoria Mitchell taking their place in Australia’s premier 5km road race.
Wellings finished 4th over 5000m at this years Commonwealth Games, Mitchell matching that result in the Steeplechase.
McGregor’s best result at the Bolt was in 2003 when she finished third.
Two of our brightest young running talents Queensland’s Clare Geraghty and Sydney’s Lisa Corrigan are keen to make their mark on this prestigious event.
Geraghty tasted victory over this course at the Noosa Half Marathon in August so had a distinct advantage knowing the course.
The 19-year-old is the ‘hottest’ thing on the running scene and looks set for a very bright future after some impressive results this year winning the Jetty to Jetty and edged into second spot by one second at the Bridge to Brisbane. Back in August she also picked up a second place in the City to Surf.
21 year old Corrigan was a 1500 finalist in Commonwealth Games and keen to do well after missing this event last year due to illness. Corrigan has also racked up some good results this year winning the Canberra Time 10km, Bathurst Fun Run and Gold Coast 10km.
The Noosa Bolt was introduced to the festival program in 1991 as the Streets Magnum 5km Run and over the past 15 years is now officially recognised as the premier 5km Road Race in Australia. It has seen a couple of name changes over the years but Asics were thrilled to be able to secure sponsorship for 2005. The winners list includes some of the world’s best runners – Steve Moneghetti, Sonia O’Sullivan, Susie Power and the fastest white man in the world at the moment, Craig Mottram just some of names to claim victories.
The ASICS Bolt is part of the Super Saturday action along Noosa Parade which kicks off with Aussie Football Legends Triathlon from 3.00pm follow by the High Tech Health Noosa Criterium featuring some of the world’s top cyclists.
The 2006 Noosa Triathlon Multi Sport Festival will be staged from 25 – 29th October. For further information on the event log onto www.usmevents.com.au.
