All doping control tests conducted at the recent IAAF World Road Running Championships were returned negative, the world governing body announced today.
94 of the 141 athletes who competed at the October 8 event in Debrecen, Hungary, were tested, either before or during the competition. The testing included 77 blood screens taken prior to the competition and 17 tests during the competition. All in-competition samples were tested for EPO. All information collected from the blood screening will be added to the IAAF database to aid in the individual profiling of athlete blood parameters.
Said IAAF President Lamine Diack, "We have just completed a very successful IAAF World Anti-Doping Symposium where our elite athletes stressed their commitment to drug free sport, so in this manner it is particularly pleasing that all these results are negative and we can applaud the wonderful efforts achieved at this event."
Lornah Kiplagat of The Netherlands won the women's 20 km event, setting a pending world record of 1:03:21, and was awarded a US $50,000 world record bonus, on top of her $30,000 first place prize. The men's winner was Zersenay Tadesse in 56:01, to claim the first ever world title of any kind for Eritrea. His performance made him the second fastest ever over the distance.
