OTTAWA – Athletics Canada would like to congratulate Ray Elrick from Ottawa, Peter Eriksson from Ottawa, Jean Laroche from Sherbrooke, QC and Pierre Pomerleau of Charlesbour, QC who will receive the 2006 Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Award. The Coaching Excellence Awards are presented to coaches whose athletes have won medals over the past year at open World Championships, Olympic Games, or Paralympic Games.
Ray Elrick is the coach of Jason Dunkerley who won two gold medals at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championships in Assen, Netherlands. Dunkerley won gold in the 1,500-metres and 800-metres in the T-11 class (visually impaired).
Peter Eriksson coaches Chantal Petitclerc who added yet another outstanding season to her already illustrious career. Petitclerc won two gold medals in the T-54 class (paraplegics) at the IPC Worlds, setting a new Championship record in the 200-metres. Petitclerc was also named Canadian Flag Bearer for the Opening Ceremonies of the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia.
Jean Laroche, Athletics Canada Paralympic Head Coach, is also the personal coach of Diane Roy. Roy won a silver medal in the 1500-metres T-54 class at the IPC World Championships.
Pierre Pomerleau is the coach of Dean Bergeron who won bronze medals in the 200-metres and 400-metres T-52 (quadriplegics) class at the IPC Worlds.
The winners will be presented with their awards at the Sport Leadership Awards Dinner on Friday November 3rd in Vancouver. Athletics Canada is the national sport governing body for the sport of track and field including cross-country running, road running and road racing.
