Yesterday, global natural gas business BG Group entered three teams into the inaugural ITU Corporate World Championships in Cancun, Mexico and achieved two gold and one bronze medal positions. The teams, made up of nine employees from six different BG offices around the world, competed on an Olympic-size course against 17 other international corporate teams. BG Group’s involvement follows the announcement in June of a nine year partnership with the International Triathlon Union (ITU) and highlights the global reach of the company’s activities and support for the new partnership across its countries of operation.
From BG Group’s Canada office, Commercial and Marketing Manager Andre Giesbers undertook the 10km run for his relay team, Triathlon Team One, which took gold within their group. Andre was joined my team mates from BG Group in the UK and Bolivia.
Commenting on the experience Giesbers said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have competed and absolutely delighted to have won in our group. The race was really tough but the crowds in Cancun kept us going. It really has been an incredible experience; to get so much advice prior to the race and use it when competing against athletes from around the world has been fantastic. It’s also great to have raced on the same course as the elite athletes competing in the BG Triathlon World Cup.”
The BG Team members were selected from almost one hundred employee applications and all compete regularly in a variety of sports when at home. The event requires a combination of individual skills and teamwork to achieve success. To prepare for this, they attended a three day ‘Mind Body Soul’ symposium hosted by former Olympians, health experts and world class triathletes. The speakers transferred skills using their experience and knowledge of sport, sharing race techniques and training tips while at the same time enhancing the concept of team work.
