Organizers of the BLOM Bank Beirut Marathon have been forced to postpone Sunday's race because of the shocking assassination of anti-Syrian minister and leader of the Maronite Catholic community, Pierre Gemayel. He was the fifth anti-Syrian member of the ruling government to die in the last two years.

"We are just postponing not cancelling the marathon," Zeina Dacache a marathon spokesman told the British Press Association, journalist Dave Martin reported. "He was a good leader and it would be wrong for us to be seen celebrating our event but we plan going ahead with it at a future date."

A new date for the race was not announced.
