USATF High Performance Division to host Middle/Long Distance Podium Education Project
The High Performance Division of USATF is hosting the third annual
Middle/Long Distance Summit in Las Vegas, Nev. Nearly 40 of the very
best middle and long distance coaches will be on hand December 14-16 to
exchange and share the most current and effective coaching/training
methodology and science for middle and long distance runners. This very
high qualitative and quantitative event is open to all interested
coaches who would like to attend at their own expense, but without a
registration fee.
"The Middle/Long Distance Podium Education Project is to bring together
some of the best and most advanced minds and thinking about middle and
long distance running," said Brooks Johnson, USATF High Performance
Chair. "We have a special emphasis on those who have achieved success at
the podium level."
Presenters will include Dr. Fabian Polo, Dr. Joe Vigil and Coaches
Robert Gary and Terrence Mahon. Topics will include the areas of
science, and coaching such as biomechanics, altitude training and
peaking.
The event is organized around several concepts and objectives, including
the identification of the Critical Zones and Critical Factors that
impact performance in the areas of: Biomechanics; Overtraining and Peak
Performance Markers; and Foot and Lower Leg Function and Strength.

Applied Materials Silicon Valley Turkey Trot/Seagate 5K attracts World Class Field
SAN JOSE, Calif. - In only its second year, the Applied Materials
Silicon Valley Turkey Trot 5K/10K and its companion Seagate Elite 5K
road race, to be held Thanksgiving morning, is expected to draw 3,000
participants and a superb field of world class and nationally ranked
distance runners who will vie for a prize purse of more than $22,000.
The men's field includes three Olympians, an NCAA (collegiate)
10,000-meter national champion, and more than a dozen athletes who have
run under 14 minutes for the 5 km distance. The women's race features
several of the most promising young distance runners in the world, one
Olympian, and national champions and medalists.
Blake Boldon, 27, a coach at Iowa State University, returns to defend
his men's title. Boldon will face the likes of 2004 Olympian Dan Browne,
31, of Beaverton, Ore., and 2006 USA 20 km champion Ryan Hall.
The women's elite field is also packed with top talent, including Sara
Hall, who won the USA Women's 5 km Championship in Providence, RI in
15:40; Magdalene Mukunzi of Kenya, who brings a 5 km best of 15:38 to
the field. Also joining the fray will be Jenelle Deatherage, 29, of Team
USA Minnesota; and Romania's Adriana Pirtea brings a personal best of
15:36 to the race.
The top three men and women will earn $2,500, $1,500, and $500
respectively. $5,000 bonuses are up for grabs for the male and/or female
who tops the current U.S. 5 km road records. The current U.S. records
are held by two Californians: Marc Davis (13 minutes and 24 seconds set
in 1996), and Deena Kastor (Drossin) (14:54, 2002). This year's race
will also host the Pacific Association/USA Track & Field Open Men's 5 km
Championship presented by Santa Clara Valley National Bank.

U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Marathon
One of the most celebrated pre-Olympic events, the 2008 U.S. Olympic
Marathon Trials, will be hosted by two of the world's most distinguished
marathon organizers.
The New York Road Runners will conduct the men's Olympic Trials during
the New York City Marathon weekend on November 3, 2007.
The Boston Athletic Association will host the women's event on Sunday,
April 20, 2008, the day before the 112th running of the Boston Marathon.
