Athletics: Fast Times Mark Applied Materials Silicon Valley Turkey Trot/Seagate Elite 5K

SAN JOSE, Calif. - (November 23, 2006) - Over 3,100 runners prefaced their Thanksgiving dinners under radiant blue skies this morning by burning calories at the 2nd Annual Applied Materials Silicon Valley Turkey Trot 5K/10K in downtown San Jose. In the companion Seagate Elite 5K, a covey of the most talented distance runners in the world registered some of the fastest times in the U.S. this year as Mexico's Juan Luis Barrios and Canada's Malindi Elmore captured victories.

In the women's elite 5K (3.1 miles) race, Elmore, 26, demonstrated the form she used as a 2004 Canadian Olympian, and a four-time All-American at Stanford University to score a convincing win. Elmore waited until a half mile remained on the fast 3/4-mile, multiple loop course before leaving her rivals behind. Her winning time was an excellent 15 minutes and 56 seconds. A trio of Kenyan's followed Elmore, including Magdalene Mukunzi (2nd, 15:59) and Florence Jepkosgei (3rd, 16:00). Sara Hall (6th, 16:06), this year's USA national 5K road champion, was the first American woman.

"I was getting kind of nervous partway through because it was a big lead group," said Elmore. "I thought the race might come down to a kick, and although I'm a miler, I don't really like those kinds of races. So, I picked it up with 800 meters to go to see who went with me, and then did it again with 400 to go just to make sure no one did."

Barrios earned a win in the men's elite race over a covey of top rivals by withstanding a mid-race surge by 2006 U.S. cross country 12K champion Ryan Hall. Barrios, 23, overtook Hall late in the race and proceeded for the win in a time of 13:47. He led four men who dipped below 14 minutes. Josphat Boit, this year's NCAA Division I (collegiate) national 10,000-meter champion, was second in 13:49. It was Boit's first post-collegiate race. Hall (13:52) hung on for third.

"Hall did a lot of the work in the race, and I know he's a fast finisher, but I was able to get him in the end," said Barrios, who was a dual junior medalist at the 2002 Central American and Caribbean Games, and captured the prestigious Mt. SAC 5,000-meter title on the track in Walnut, Calif. last spring.

Each victor won $2,500 portions of an over $22,000 prize purse. The event also served as a 5K open men's championship for the Pacific Association of USA Track & Field (presented by Santa Clara Valley National Bank) in which $2,500 in prize funds was awarded to top PA/USATF individuals and clubs. Hall, who resides in Mammoth Lakes, Calif. and trains with Team Running USA, earned the championship victory.

In two years. the Silicon Valley Turkey Trot has raised over $325,000 for three local charity organizations: Santa Clara Family Health Foundation, Second Harvest Food Bank, and the Housing Trust of Santa Clara County.

The event is presented by Applied Materials. Additional gold medal sponsors include Seagate, Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, SAP, KB Home, EMC2, and Santa Clara Valley National Bank.
