Athletics: 2006 Canadian X-Country Championships take place tomorrow in Vancouver

December 1, Ottawa - The 2006 Canadian Cross Country Championships, hosted by British Columbia Athletics, will take place tomorrow at Jericho Beach Park in Vancouver.  The Championships will also serve as trials for the 2007 IAAF World Cross Country Championships held in Mombasa, Kenya in March.  The top finishers in both the men’s and women’s junior and senior races will also be eligible for selection on the Canadian team which will compete at the 2007 NACAC Cross Country Championships in Clermont, Florida.

Over 500 of Canada’s finest cross country runners from clubs and provinces across Canada will compete in six championship races. “We are very proud to host some of Canada’s finest runners from the various provinces and territories to Vancouver for the 2006 Cross Country Championships at Jericho Beach.  The weather conditions and footing on the course could make for very tactical and exciting races,” said Championship Chair Jake Madderom.

The primarily flat course, with some rolling hills, will welcome 2005 Senior Men’s Champion Simon Bairu from Regina, Saskatchewan.  Bairu will be looking to defend his title as well as add a second national title to his name for the 2006 season.  Bairu claimed the TransCanada National 10km Championship this past October in Ottawa.  Joining him in the field will be 2006 CIS Cross Country Champion Geoff Kerr from Calgary.  In the junior 8km race, Sean Flemming from Regina will be looking to defend his junior title.

The senior women’s race will see a rematch of the top 3 finishers from the 2006 Canadian Interuniversity Sport Championships. CIS Champion Megan Brown of Newmarket, Ontario will line-up against silver medalist Laura Moulton from Guelph, Ontario and bronze medalist Jackie Malette from Windsor, Ontario.  Also joining the field will be local product Lucy Smith from Victoria, British-Columbia. Lucy is the 2006 Canadian Half Marathon and TransCanada 10km Champion.
