Athletics: Date set for ’07 TransCanada 10KM Canadian Championships

December 5, Ottawa – Athletics Canada announced today the date for the 2007 TransCanada 10km Canadian Championships and Run with the Champions 10km mass participation race. The event will take place Saturday October 13 2007 in Ottawa.

Ottawa was the site of the inaugural TransCanada 10km Championships earlier this fall in a course held in the shadows of Parliament Hill. Simon Bairu from Regina, Saskatchewan crossed the finish line first in front of the Canadian War Museum to earn the men’s Canadian crown while Lucy Smith from Victoria, BC was the Canadian women’s champion. To view the full results, including the mass race and age category winners, as well as photos from race day, please visit TransCanada10km.ca.

Athletics Canada will once again welcome politicians and political staffers in the Political Challenge race category.

The TransCanada 10km Canadian Championships will once again play host to the Timex National Road Race Series Final. Developed in 1989, in conjunction with the provincial branch associations of Athletics Canada, the Timex Road Race Series holds over 110 races with in excess of 140,000 participants per year. It is Canada’s only National Road Race Series, encompassing nine series in all provinces.

“TransCanada celebrates the pursuit of excellence at all levels, and we’re proud to continue to support an event that enables all runners to challenge themselves alongside championship level athletes. We place a strong emphasis on contributing to the health and wellness of the communities in which we live and work,” said Russ Girling, President, Pipelines at TransCanada Corporation.

Stay tuned to TransCanada10km.ca for upcoming announcements including the course layout as well as a new user-friendly online registration system for both the elite and Run with the Champions 10km races. Athletics Canada will also be releasing details on a special promotion where early-bird registrations will be entered into a draw to win Timex Ironman watches.
