The Flora London Marathon, part of the five-race World Marathon Majors, announced their elite men's field today. The exceptional line-up put together by race director Dave Bedford features seven of the top ten-ranked marathoners for 2006 according to Track & Field News, led by world #1 Haile Gebrselassie.
"We are delighted to have such a strong field for the men's elite race again this year," said Bedford in a media release. "The presence of the world record holder, the world and Olympic champions, our reigning champion and the in-form Haile Gebrselassie will, I am sure, mean we have another hugely exciting race through London's streets."
Gebrselassie, who won the real,- Berlin and Fukuoka Marathons last year, will be flanked by his old rival, Paul Tergat of Kenya, the world record holder; Felix Limo and Martin Lel of Kenya, who finished first and second, respectively, last year; Jaouad Gharib of Morocco, the two-time world champion, and Stefano Baldini of Italy, the reigning Olympic gold medalist.
Jon Brown, the Welshman who lives in British Columbia, is the top U.K. entrant.
