NEW YORK (16-Jan) -- Alan Webb has been added to the Wanamaker Mile at the 100th Millrose Games, organizers announced today, setting up an intriguing three-way battle between Webb, Bernard Lagat and Craig Mottram.
Webb, who turned 24 years-old last week, competed in one previous Millrose Games. He finished third in the Wanamaker Mile in 2005 in 4:00.91 behind Lagat and Laban Rotich. Lagat, who has won the Wanamaker four times, set the meet record that year of 3:52.87.
Already running well this indoor season, Webb ran a low-key meet at George Mason University on, winning a one-mile race in 3:59.34 on a flat 200m track which is not regarded as particularly fast. The former star at South Lakes High School has an indoor personal best of 3:57.52 set in Fayetteville, Ark., in 2004.
At the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory here on Saturday, Webb will be running an invitational mile at the New Balance Games. His appearance will be six years to the day since he set his U.S. high school indoor mile record on the same track.
