NEW YORK (20-Jan) -- Today's meet at the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory here in upper Manhattan will feature two invitational miles for professional athletes inserted into a massive high school meeting, the 12th New Balance Games.
The headliner is Alan Webb who, six years to the day after setting his U.S. high school record for the mile at the Armory (3:59.86), will take on a solid international field and try to break the Armory ane meet record: 3:54.98 set by Irishman Mark Carroll in 2000. His rivals include Welshman James Thie, Englishman Andy Baddeley, New Zealander Adrian Blincoe, and Americans Jason Lunn and Grant Robison.
In the women's invitational mile, Carmen Douma-Hussar of Canada is the leading contender for victory. She holds the Canadian record for the mile indoors (4:28.43) set on the Armory track at the New Balance Games in 2005. Her key rivals should be Americans Sara Hall and Amy Mortimer. Irishwomen Mary Cullen and Roisin McGettigan are also looking to do well.
The meeting website is located at www.armorytrack.com and there will be video available sometime in the late afternoon, today.
