Triathlon: Mark Allen Inspires and Educates in Canada’s Capital

Monday, January 22, 2007 (Ottawa, ON) – Ironman Legend Mark Allen was hoping that his mid-winter trip to Ottawa would feature a true experience of Canadian winter. Mother nature did not disappoint, delivering the coldest two days of the season so far with daily highs of -4F on both days. The cold weather was simply another highlight though of this third annual event, presented again this year by RunnersWeb.com.

Based at North America’s only temperature-controlled 400m indoor track facility, the weekend featured a series of lectures and active sessions in all three sports. Allen coached the 25 area triathletes through a 90 minute swim, 2 hour track session, and a 90 minute ride on indoor trainers. The lecture sessions covered topics ranging from nutrition and program planning, to the psychological side of the sport.

Organizer Geordie McConnell says that the second day focus on the mental skills required for peak performance was a highlight. “The training information Mark delivered was fantastic and we’ll all make great use of it. But he also gave us mental tools that not only relate to triathlon but will help us to get the most of out life in general.”

On Saturday night, Allen was the key note speaker at Triathlon Talk 2007, a charity fundraiser. With 150 in attendance, he shared inspirational moments from his career, interspersing Ironman video clips throughout. Allen’s stories helped the audience to learn much more of the background to his career, especially the Iron War of 1989 and his incredible comeback victory in his last race in Kona in 1995.
