Athletics: Hunter-Galvan And Family Injured In Car Accident

From David Monti © 2006 Race Results Weekly, all rights reserved RaceResultsWeekly.com New Zealand Olympian Liza Hunter-Galvan and her family were injured in a serious car accident in Texas last Sunday, according to a spokesman, Paul Perrone, of Fila Running. All six members of the family were hurt, some seriously. According to Perrone, who released a written statement on behalf of the family, the Galvans were returning from a race when their pick-up was struck by a tractor trailer near George West, Tex. The Galvan's vehicle rolled over and went into a ditch. Two of the Galvan children were airlifted from the scene of the accident by helicopter and one was listed in critical condition, while the other was treated and released the next day. Hunter-Galvan was admitted to Beeville Hospital and her husband Ariel Galvan received treatment at Driscoll Children's Hospital where he was taken with his children. "Ariel is a hero. He saved our lives," stated Hunter-Galvan. "If he didn't swerve, we would have hit the 18 wheeler head on and they would have had to cut us out." Hunter-Galvan, 37, is a familiar figure in Texas road racing (she lives in Helotes). She won the San Antonio Marathon in both 2005 and 2006, and represented New Zealand in the 2004 Olympics, 2005 World Championships and 2006 Commonwealth Games.
