Athletics: News & Notes - Lagat breaks American record

Lagat breaks 3 km AR

Bernard Lagat added the American record in the indoor 3,000 meters to his lengthy list of accomplishments Saturday at the Norwich Union Grand Prix in Birmingham, England.

Lagat, who also owns the mile and 1,500 indoor ARs, won a close race in Birmingham in 7 minutes, 32.43 seconds to smash Tim Broe's American record of 7:39.23 from 2002. In Birmingham, Lagat edged out Markos Geneti of Ethiopia (7:32.69) and Augustine Choge of Kenya (7:33.09) for the win. The time is a 2007 world leader and makes Lagat the fourth-fastest man in history, behind multiple world record-breakers Daniel Komen, Haile Gebrselassie and Kenenisa Bekele.

The meet also featured a world record by Ethiopia's Bekele in the 2,000m (4:49.99).
