Triathlon: Nineteen Goes Pink

Triathlon wetsuits have historically been like the original Ford Model-T cars - “You can have any colour you want, as long as it’s black!” Nineteen Wetsuits is trying to change this, and not just to be fashion forward but to raise awareness and funds for a great cause as well. This year Nineteen will debut its Pink Ribbon program of wetsuits for women. Twenty dollars from every Pink Ribbon suit sold will be donated to breast cancer research. Women will be able to choose between the new top-of-the-line Pink Ribbon-edition Frequency wetsuit or the value oriented Pink Ribbon-edition Pipeline wetsuit. Both of these Nineteen suits, while still being predominantly black in colour, will have very tasteful and fashionable pink graphics on key parts of the wetsuits and a stylized Pink Ribbon graphic on the left chest.

“Triathlon wetsuits, have not really been looked upon as a fashion item in the past and women did not really have any options at all in this regard”, says Nineteen’s Sales and Marketing Manager Steve Fleck. “We wanted to give the rapidly growing ranks of women triathletes some great looking options in two of our outstanding wetsuits with some beautiful pink trim on them, while more importantly, helping out a great cause that has impacted so many women and their families.” Fleck goes on to point out that “Nineteen was the first triathlon wetsuit manufacturers, to offer women’s specific fit throughout our line with the debut of the ElleSystem in 2001 and women’s only colour options in 2004, so to do this for our women customers is a natural extension for us.”

Funds raised through U.S. sales will be donated to the Susam G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation www.komen.org and funds raised through Canadian sales will be donated to The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation www.cbcf.org.

The Nineteen Pink Ribbon Campaign will be supported with print ads in key triathlon media, product hang-tags, online promotion at a new micro-site, www.swiminpink.com, and other editorial coverage in the triathlon media and women’s fitness and apparel magazines.
