UK Athletics, the governing body for athletics in Great Britain, hopes to pick up some additional speed through a partnership with Italian car maker Alfa Romeo. According to a press release sent today, Alfa Romeo has become the official car supplier for the British federation, providing a fleet of vehicles for UK Athletics coaches, staff and a select group of top performing athletes.
Through this partnership, UK Athletics will have access to the vehicles through special lease rates which, according to UK Athletics performance director David Collins, will mean more money is available to support training activities.
"We are pleased to have formed a relationship with Alfa Romeo," said Collins. "The arrangements offer a good fit to our performance needs, whilst also releasing important resources to help us in our pursuit of excellence."
The models made available by Alfa Romeo are the 147 (a hatchback), Brera (a two-door coupe), Spider (a two-door convertible), GT (a luxury two-door coupe) and 159 (a four-door sedan which also comes as a wagon).
"Passion, performance and pride run through our veins and the 'cuore sportivo' [sporting heart] of Alfa Romeo," said managing director Christopher Nicoll. "We trust our involvement will support UK Athletics' long term ambitions and look forward to future success on the track and field."
