Triathlon: Canadian Woman Wins the CEO Triathlon Challenge in St. Croix

Kim Nelson out-swam, out-biked, and out-ran 13 fellow CEOs to win the CEO Triathlon Challenge on a very difficult course at the St. Croix Ironman 70.3 on Sunday, May 6. Kim, CEO of Royal Containers in Brampton, Ontario, finished the 70.3 mile triathlon in 5hr, 26 mins, beating out Charlie Komar of NYC, John Klarer of Calgary, Alberta and 11 other CEOs.

This is the first time a woman has ever won a CEO Triathlon Challenge event overall, as well as the first time a Canadian has ever won! Kim put together an incredible swim, bike, and run to pass Charlie Komar with 2 miles remaining on the half-marathon distance run to seal the victory.

The feedback from the CEO competitors for this inaugural event was simply incredible; with 36% rating the overall experience as 'exceeding their expectations' and 64% rating is as ' far exceeding their expectations'! As Ted Kennedy, President of CEO Challenges points out, "We are very proud of the tremendously positive feedback we have received from this event, and especially when you consider the level of treatment these CEOs are accustomed to! This is a difficult half-Ironman distance race in typically tough, hot conditions. However, the location is simply outstanding, and the island of St. Croix is perfect for this event."

As far as the outcome of the race, Kennedy says, "I am so very impressed with Kim's performance. She was racing against some very experienced triathletes who all wanted to win the CEO Challenge event and the slot to the World Championship. She raced very smart, and methodically picked her way through the field to come out on top as the overall CEO Challenge champion. Her fellow competitors have nothing but the utmost respect for her mental toughness and talent."

As a result of their performances, Kim and Charlie Komar won slots to the CEO Ironman Challenge World Championship in Kona, Hawaii in October. However, due to commitments, Kim declined the slot, and Charlie will be joined in Kona by John Klarer, where they will race against 10 other CEOs who will earn they way via CEO Challenge events staged throughout the world this year.

The 2008 CEO Triathlon Challenge in St. Croix is being planned now, with final details expected to be announced this summer. This is a race and destination that all triathletes should experience at least once their careers.
