The winning miler who breaks four minutes on the crushed brick track of Galt Collegiate Institute in Cambridge, Ontario, next month will drive away with a new Mercedes sedan, organizers announced yesterday.
The 2007 Mercedes-Benz Classic Mile, scheduled for Saturday, June 16, is offering a Mercedes B200 sedan should the winner crack the four minute barrier, a feat accomplished two years ago by Kenyan Laban Rotich who established the meet record of 3:58.9. He also won last year's event in 4:09.1, just edging Nate Brannen, in chilly and windy conditions. Rotich plans to be back in Cambridge to defend his title, organizers said.
For Mercedes, it's all about promoting excellence. "To me it's reminiscent of the work Mercedes-Benz has done in the last 120
years to become what it is today," said JoAnne Caza, director of communications and public relations for Mercedes-Benz Canada. "I just felt it would represent us well and gives us an opportunity to support a very different event."
Ms. Caza valued the car at Cn$ 30,000 (USD 27,200).
