MONTEREY / SALINAS, Calif. - (May 30, 2007) - The Monterey Bay Wednesday Night Laundry Runners (WNLR), a USA Track & Field affiliated adult team on the California Central Coast, has announced their annual 2007 Scholarship Award recipients for distance running. These deserving high school seniors will share in a total of over $8,300 and receive an outstanding achievement plaque presented at their respective high school's scholarship and awards event. This year's winners are:
Hector Aleman - Seaside High School
Mark Blucher - Everett Alvarez High School
Francisco Cornejo - North Monterey County High School
Thea Lee - Carmel High School
Shannon McVannel - Salinas High School
Steven Otero - Palma High School
Ty Rothstein - Carmel High School
Cynthia Toth - Carmel High School
The seniors are nominated by their coaches and subsequently interviewed by the WNLR Scholarship Committee. After careful review, the award recipients are selected. This is the seventh year that the WNLR's have provided scholarship assistance to help outstanding student runners further their education and love of running. High school senior runners must meet criteria in the categories of running excellence, leadership and academic achievement. Each recipient must be planning to continue competitive distance running in either a two- or four-year college.
The awards are generously funded by WNLR members and a large grant from the Big Sur International Marathon organization.
"Each year, we are proud to support the WNLR who honor these worthy high school seniors in their efforts toward their scholastic education and collegian running endeavors. With educational costs soaring, more money is needed to help these young, talented individuals," says Dr. Hugo Ferlito, chairman of the BSIM.
