INDIANAPOLIS - USC freshman Shana Woods claimed her second title in two
years in the women's heptathlon and Jordan Scott set a meet record in
the men's pole vault on day two of the 2007 Finish Line USA Junior Track
& Field Championships at the IU Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer
Stadium on the campus of IUPUI in downtown Indianapolis.
Reigning U.S. Junior champion Shana Woods won her second consecutive
title in the women's heptathlon with 5,521 points. Woods is only the
second athlete ever to repeat as champion in this event with the last
repeat coming in 1988. Ryann Kraiss, a member of Team USA who will
compete at the 2007 IAAF World Youth Championships, placed second with
5,377.
University of Kansas freshman Jordan Scott vaulted his way to a meet
record in the men's pole vault with his clearance of 5.52 meters/18 feet
1.25 inches. The previous record of 5.51m/18-1 was set by Lawrence
Johnson in 1993. 2006 U.S. Junior champion Scott Roth was second with
5.15m/16-10.75.
Missouri freshman Nick Adcock brought home the title in the men's
decathlon with 7,293 points. Entering day two, Adcock had been trailing
by 51 points and was down 208 points heading into the javelin. But a
throw of 55.26m/181-3 leapt him into first place with an 87 point
cushion and he was able to hold on for the win at the conclusion of the
1,500m (4:49.77). Wesley Bray of Houston took second with 7,158 and
University of Oregon freshman Ashton Eaton was third with 7,155.
2006 U.S. Junior Cross Country champion Nicole Blood ran away with the
crown in the women's 3,000 meters. A freshman at the University of
Oregon, Blood ran 9 minutes 27.81 seconds. Angela Bizzarri of Illinois
was second in 9:38.42 and Keri Bland was third in 9:49.43.
American Junior record-holder Kristi Castlin, a freshman at Virginia
Tech, won the women's 100m hurdles in 13.07. Just behind her in second
was VT teammate Queen Quedith Harrison in 13.12. 2007 Nike Outdoor
Nationals champion Jackie Coward was third in 13.17.
Rynell Parson, a 16-year-old sophomore at Stevens High School (Texas)
won the men's 100m in an astonishing10.23. Parson edged out Nebraska
freshman Arthur Wims, who took second in 10.24. Shane Crawford was third
in 10.38.
An eight-time state champion while at Cheyenne Central High School
(Wyo.), Brendan Ames won the men's 110m hurdles in a windy 13.15
(+2.7mps). Johnny Dutch was second in 13.36.
UCLA freshman Darius Savage won the men's discus with a toss of 61.15
meters/200 feet 7 inches. Savage's throw was over seven feet farther
than runner-up Luke Bryant, who finished with a mark of 58.90m/193-3.
Savage qualified for the Pan American Junior Championships, but will be
unable to compete due to football obligations with UCLA.
University of Tennessee freshman Lynne Layne cruised to victory in the
women's 100m in a career-best 11.31. University of South Carolina-bound
Shayla Mahon was second in 11.36.
Also on the track, 2007 Nike Outdoor National 2,000m steeplechase
champion Ryan McDermott won the men's 3,000m steeplechase in 9:08.47.
Eric Ashe was second in 9:12.02. 2007 U.S. Junior Cross Country champion
Elliot Heath won the men's 5,000m in 14:36.32, while Kenny Klotz of
Oregon was second in 14:37.42.
In other field event action, University of Oklahoma freshman Kevin
Snyder won the men's high jump with his clearance of 2.13 meters/6 feet
11.75 inches. Eric Thompson was second at 2.11m/6-10.75. Michael Putman
won the men's shot put with his heave of 18.78m/61-7.5 and UCLA freshman
Nicholas Robinson was second with 18.70m/61-4.25. University of Maryland
freshman Jason Allen won the men's long jump with a leap of 7.44m/24-5
while Ashton Eaton of the University of Oregon was second with
7.32m/24-0.25.
In the women's long jump, Jamesha Youngblood won the title with her mark
of 6.31m/20-8.5. Danielle Watson was the runner-up with 6.05m/19-10.25.
Air Force Academy freshman Sara Neubauer won the women's shot put with a
throw of 14.89m/48-10.25 while Nneka Ugochukw was the runner-up with
14.83m/48-8. University of Kentucky freshman Emily Bernhardt won the
women's hammer throw with 53.61m/175-11 and Gabrielle Middles was the
runner-up with 52.91m/173-7.
