Webb posts world leader with Paris win

Reigning USA Outdoor 1,500m champion Alan Webb ran a huge personal best and posted the fastest men's 1,500m time in the world this outdoor season Friday at the Meeting Gaz de France in Paris, which is the second event of the 2007 IAAF Golden League.

Webb passed runner-up Mehdi Baala of France with less than 20 meters to go and held on for the win in 3 minutes, 30.54 seconds. Webb's performance obliterated his previous 1,500m personal best of 3:32.52 set in 2005. American Bernard Lagat finished seventh in 3:35.09.

The men's 100 meters was won by Bahamian Derrick Atkins, who crossed the finish line in 10.00 seconds. Mark Jelks, who finished fourth at the 2007 AT&T USA Outdoor Championships, was the runner-up in 10.09 seconds, with 2004 Olympic 200m gold medalist Shawn Crawford third in a seasonal best time of 10.13 seconds

As the only American entrant in the men's 400 meters, 2007 USA Outdoor Championships runner-up LaShawn Merritt was victorious in 44.62 seconds. Gary Kikaya of The Congo was the runner-up in 45.32 seconds.

In men's hurdles action, Dayron Robles of Cuba (ranked #3 in the world in 2006) was the surprise winner in the men's 110m hurdles, with 2007 USA Outdoor Championships fifth-place finisher Anwar Moore the runner-up. Both competitors were timed in 13.13 seconds. World record holder Liu Xiang of China finished third in 13.15. 2005 World Outdoor Championships silver medalist James Carter won the men's 400m hurdles in 48.61 seconds, with 2000 Olympic gold medalist and reigning USA Outdoor 400m champion Angelo Taylor the runner-up in 48.73 seconds.

Two Americans finished third in men's field event action in Paris as eight-time national champion and American record holder Breaux Greer threw the javelin 85.64 meters/281 feet, and reigning USA Outdoor champion Aarik Wilson soared 16.96 meters/55 feet 7.75 inches in the triple jump.

Reigning U.S. women's 100m champion Torri Edwards continued her winning ways on Friday in winning her specialty in 11.17 seconds. 2005 USA champion Lisa Barber was the runner-up in 11.19 seconds, with reigning world champion Lauryn Williams third in 11.25.

2006 World Athlete of the Year Sanya Richards returned to her dominating ways in the women's 400 meters with the fastest time in the world this year of 49.52 seconds. 2007 AT&T USA Outdoor Championships runner-up Natasha Hastings finished third in 50.45 seconds.

Michelle Perry displayed again why she is the #1 ranked 100m hurdler in the world by defeating a strong field with her time of 12.56 seconds. Lolo Jones, who finished third last month at USA Nationals, finished third in Paris in 12.71 seconds.
