Triathlon: Stafford Seeking Salford Triathlon Glory

Sean Stafford from Failsworth in Manchester has been selected to be part of an exclusive team at the Salford BG Triathlon World Cup on 29 July.

The 39 year old will be given special nutritional and training advice by ‘For Goodness Shakes’ as they attempt to prove that their help can make athletes go faster at Britain’s only World Cup triathlon event.

Sports Nutrition company For Goodness Shakes has hand picked a team of ten athletes from around the country for the triathlon and is stating that it will enable them to improve on their times recorded at the same event last year. Robert will receive nutritional support with products and advice, training tips and mentoring.

Sean said, “I applied to be part of the team because I want to improve on my performance at last year’s Salford Triathlon. I have only ever used isotonic drinks for re-hydration before this, but For Goodness Shakes claim that it’s products can make a difference to performance, I am hoping to find that this is true.

“Salford 2006 was my first ever triathlon, I did it in 3 hours 09 minutes for the full distance. I am aiming to improve on this at the end of July, taking my time down to 3hours.”

The Salford Triathlon is free for anyone to come along and watch, with the elite events starting at 11.30am on The Quays. International triathletes from 31 different countries came to Salford last year to contest one of the most competitive triathlon races of 2006 in front of 22,000 spectators.

Organisers of the event, Salford City Council, are expecting hundreds of entrants this year. With three current World Champions, British Triathlon is at the top of its game. Great Britain has just selected its team for the event, which includes World Champion triathlete Tim Don. With just one year to go until the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, hopes are high for a home winner in Salford on 29 July.

Sean added, “I have always tried to keep myself fit and used to play football but as I got older, it got harder and harder to play. I bought a bike a few years ago and started cycling but I missed the competitive feeling I got with football. Triathlon came to the rescue!

“I challenged myself to compete in the Salford Triathlon last year and am really looking forward to going back and doing it again this summer. I have been doing two 10km runs, a 20mile bike ride and a 1mile swim, plus two gym sessions each week in preparation.

“I find swimming the hardest and this always lets me down but the beauty of triathlons is that you can make it up with the other two disciplines. I have been practising in organised sessions in the Salford Canal to try and strengthen my stroke.”

Speaking of the event itself Sean said, “It is fantastic, Salford is a first class place to hold a sporting event, especially a triathlon as all the stages take place in close proximity. The route takes you past all the town’s landmarks as well, which draws the crowds of spectators in.

“The atmosphere is amazing on the day. In comparison to football where the atmosphere can become quite hostile, at triathlons it is always cheerful and there is great camaraderie between the competitors. If you get in to difficulty someone will always stop to lend a hand.”

Alex Brooks, Sports & Nutritional Manager at For Goodness Shakes commented: “The Salford BG Triathlon World Cup is an exciting event for us and we intend to clearly demonstrate how our products can help improve performance.”

“Our research has proved the benefits of drinking For Goodness Shakes after sport, now we want to prove it in a real life racing situation. At For Goodness Shakes we don’t just work with the ‘best of the best’ like Stephen Bayliss (Britain’s no.1 Iron Man). We want to get all people who do sport to understand how to maximise their performance through their nutritional strategy.”

For Goodness Shakes will be doing free sampling of their products at the Salford BG Triathlon World Cup on 29 July.

For Goodness Shakes is a world-class recovery product. Made from real ingredients including milk packed with natural protein, fruit, carbohydrate and 23 vitamins and minerals for complete nutrition. For Goodness Shakes is different to many other nutritional sports products because whilst providing world class nutrition, it tastes great and is ready to drink immediately when you need it, in the 20 minutes straight after finishing sport.

Recent research has shown that if you drink For Goodness Shakes after exercise you can recover 40% more power and do 40% more work at your next training session than if you consumed a leading sports drink.

For Goodness Shakes is also the official nutrition partner of the Salford BG World Cup Triathlon.

For Goodness Shakes Team Salford is: Mike Hannay, Stephen Gudgeon, Tim Johnstone, Russell Morris, Ian Harrison, Robert Anderson, Claire Pendery, Sean Stafford, John Pennington, Mike Curry and Peter Overton. Alex Brooks will be racing as well for For Goodness Shakes.
