Chris McCormack will race in the prestigious Monaco Ironman 70.3 event on September 2nd, and he will do it again in 2008. “Every race I compete in, I do so to win”, he says about the challenging race in the Principality completing much of the Formula 1 Circuit.
Chris McCormack from Australia confirmed his participation in the Monaco Ironman 70.3 races for the next two years committing to the event. He will race the Formula 1 of Triathlon for the first time on 2 September 2007.
Macca: “The race has really interested me for many years and for a venue there is nothing like it on earth. Monte Carlo is probably the most famous area of the European Riviera and this race is really marque in that sense. I am really excited about racing here and the course looks challenging and tough. I think I will be very successful here and look forward to the challenge against a solid field and an equally tough course."
Chris McCormack won the 1997 Triathlon World Championships and the 1997 ITU World Cup Series. It was also in 1997 that he raced the ITU Triathlon World Cup in Monte Carlo. Since then, he has won many more races around the globe and was elected “Triathlete of the Year” more than once. He knows the Principality also from a competition’s view as he already one a race here in 1997: the ITU World Cup in 1998. He uses the Monaco Ironman as a build up for his Ironman World Championship race in Kona, Hawaii on 13 October. Most probably Macca will go to Hawaii in 2007 knowing already that he is qualified for the 2008 race: The Monaco Ironman 70.3 is the only European race distributing slots for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship AND slots for the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii.
The triathlon entailing 1.9km of swimming, 90km of cycling and 21.1km of running (a total of 70.3 miles) will take place for the third time in the Principality of Monaco. 700 athletes will participate in the most exclusive Ironman with a swim off the Larvotto beach, a challenging bike ride though the hilly hinterland and a half-marathon on the world famous Formula 1 Circuit including the famous tunnel, the port, the Rascasse, the climb up Ostende and the hairpin bend – the slowest bend in Formula 1 is the fastest bend in triathlon.
