INDIANAPOLIS - Alan Webb has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after setting a new American record in the mile Saturday at the Atletiek Vlaanderenmeet in Brasschaa, Belgium.
Webb finished the race in 3 minutes 46.91 seconds, breaking National Track & Field Hall of Famer Steve Scott's 1982 record of 3:47.69. With the record, Webb is now the eighth-fastest man all-time, behind Hicham El Guerrouj, Noah Ngeny, Noureddine Morceli, Steve Cram, Daniel Komen, Venuste Niyongabo and Said Aouita.
Now in its sixth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
