Tarpon Springs, FL (August 1, 2007) – NBC will air an encore presentation of the 2006 Ford Ironman World Championship this Sunday, August 5, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. EST.
The broadcast was taped on location in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, on October 21, 2006, as nearly 1,700 athletes completed the world’s most challenging endurance event. The broadcast leads viewers on a 140.6 mile journey through the lava fields of Hawaii, where professional and age group athletes push themselves to a variety of mental and physical limits. Watch as athletes complete a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike and a 26.2 mile run in succession within the 17-hour timeframe.
Included in the broadcast are two-time world champion, Normann Stadler, from Germany, and Australia’s Michellie Jones, who celebrated victorious finishes in 2006. Additionally, several inspirational athletes are profiled to include:
- David Rozelle - While in Iraq, commanding 140 troops of the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Captain David Rozelle lost part of his right leg when a landmine exploded under his Humvee. With intensive rehabilitation, as a below-the-knee amputee, Rozelle returned to active duty and an active lifestyle.
- Jon Blais - Blais completed the 2005 Ford Ironman World Championship despite being diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. In 2006, Blais returned to Kona to celebrate the athletic accomplishments of new supporters of “The War on ALS.”
The 2006 broadcast received high marks, winning an Emmy Award at the 28th Annual Sports Emmy Awards Ceremony. With a fifth Outstanding Edited Sports Special win, one of the most coveted categories, Ironman has now captured 14 Emmy awards to date. The Sports Emmy Award recipients were chosen by a Blue Ribbon Panel of their peers from over 700 entries in 30 categories. The awards recognize outstanding achievement by individuals and programs broadcast throughout the 2006 calendar year.
